I’ve always found it to be a good way to help overcome one of the biggest obstacles on the web – the fact that you are interacting with a machine. It really is a non-human interaction. There’s nothing wrong with that, but keep in mind, people do business with people, especially when you’re talking about small local business. more »

There Is No Try

We can learn many great lessons from any number of great thinkers, prophets, and philosophers. One of the greatest of these thinkers and philosophers comes from a galaxy far, far away: Yoda. Yes, Yoda. Now stay with me for this one. One of the best lines that Yoda says in the entire Star Wars franchise is “Do, or do not. There is no try.” How many of you read that in your best Yoda voice? The problem with saying that you’ll “try” something is that it makes you appear weak and unconfident in yourself (you can debate which is worse). One of the key characteristics of successful sales people and business professionals is the confidence that they have in themselves. more »

Only have a Facebook page?

When speaking to people about the benefits of a website I have recently heard, “I don’t need a website, I have a Facebook page.” Through some investigating I found they did have a Facebook page, one of them actually very successful! Even with this I still expressed my reservations. I know I have an obviously biased stance on this issue (being a web designer), but with this experience I have to take a few moments and share why this is a mistake. more »

White Hat SEO Techniques

A few weeks ago I wrote about a few common Black Hat SEO techniques. It is packed with useful information such as you phone number, address, map, web address, and reviews. No, it isn’t your website or even your Facebook page. It’s your Google Places page.

There are two in particular that I’ve heard of several times—keyword stuffing and resubmitting your site to search engines repeatedly.

Set Your Newsletter Apart

I’ve heard a lot of talk lately about the United States Postal Service shutting down different branches/locations and eliminating deliveries on Saturday. I can’t say that I’m entirely surprised to hear this. Since its arrival on the scene, email has continually been taking a bite out of the market that used to be handled exclusively by the USPS. For this reason, it’s more important than ever to be utilizing an email marketing campaign. more »

Content Is King

It’s been said before — when it comes to an effective website, ‘content is king.’ I agree whole heartedly, content is king. But in website design, there’s a fine line to walk, with quality content on one side and visual aesthetics (eye candy) on the other. If you have too much of one and not enough of the other, your website is destined for failure. more »

Dealing With Bad Reviews

It’s been said that if someone is happy with your business, they will tell their 3 best friends. But if they are unhappy, they will tell the next 10 people they see. Today, that conversation is likely to take place on Facebook or Twitter, where those 10 people they may tell, can quickly become 100 or 1,000. We can’t control the conversations taking place on social media platforms, but we can monitor and respond to what is being said. Receiving poor or negative feedback is a common concern for business owners when debating if they want to jump in. There are several things we can do so that we can respond and learn from such reviews should they show up. more »
